The Southwind Rail Trail is a 6.5-mile trail that follows a former Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway line from Iola to Humboldt. At the north end, the trail connects to the southern end of the Prairie Spirit Trail. The surface is crushed limestone, about 12 feet wide. The Southwind Rail Trail is open every day from dawn to dusk. It is free to the public for bicycling, walking, and wheelchair access.
The northern terminus of the trail is Bruner Street in Iola, near Riverside Park, where the Southwind connects to the Prairie Spirit Trail. The southern terminus is K-224 in Humboldt. There is parking at both the northern and southern ends of the trail. A shelter and picnic area is available at about the halfway point of the trail.
